4. Shadow Sculpture
Huge shadow sculptures with a sharp color contract of deities from mainland China are erected at the turn of to each floor. The sculptures made with deep and shallow sculpturing techniques are rare in Taiwan.

During the reign of Emperor Kangxi, Qing dynasty, early settlers carried the statue of Matsu from Meizhou in Fujian to Taiwan. They landed on Taiwan at Matsu Harbor in Qianzhen (Cianjhen) and settled the deity in Wujia. As life in Wujia then was tough, and medicine was lowly developed, locals could only pray to Matsu and take pills and medicinal herb. They were healed out of luck. During the reign of Emperor Qianlong, Qing dynasty, villagers decided to build a “grass altar” for worshipping after discussions. The altar was too shabby that it was rebuilt in 1886, to worship Tianshang Shengmu (Matsu), Master Qingshui, and Marshal Dai, collectively called the “Sanjingzhu” (Three Masters of the Territory). In 1928, 12 directors led by Zheng Fa raised funds from believers to build the temple with the site selected by the three masters of territory through four descents and the name “Longchenggong Temple” given by the deities’ decree. After the completion of the temple in October 1930, other deities, including Nalakuvara (Marshal of the Central Altar), Yanping Junwang (Koxinga, King of Nanping), Chengwangye (City God), Tudi (Village (Tutelary) God), Jushenniannian (Goddess of Childbirth), Qianliyan (General of All Seeing), and Shunfeng’er (General of All Hearing) were enthroned. Refurbishment and expansion were made several times afterwards. In 1981, Chairperson Cai Cheng-xin proposed the temple reconstruction and formed the “Longchenggong Temple Reconstruction Committee” in November 1983. The project was initiated on May 12, 1983, after the main hall on the second floor was completed, deities were enthroned on November 16, 1984. These deities include the main deity Shangtian Shengmu (Matsu) and secondary deities Master Qingshui, Marshal Dai, Chengwangye Gong (City God), Jushenniannian (Goddess of Childbirth), Yanping Junwang (Koxinga, King of Nanping), Nalakuvara (Marshal of the Central Altar), Qianliyan (General of All Seeing), and Shunfeng’er (General of All Hearing) on December 29, 1985. After the third floor was completed and began service, deities were enthroned. Taisuicing Jun (Star Lord) and Dongyue Dadi (God of Taishan) on both sides of the front hall. In the rear there are two levels of niches, where Yuhuang Dadi (Jade Emperor), Sanguan Dadis (Three Great Emperor-Officials), Nandou Xingjun (Lord of the Milk Dipper), Beidou Xingjun (Lord of the Big Dipper), Shakyamuni Buddha, and Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara are on the upper level, while Grand Master of Education (Confucius), Gaunsheng Dijun (Holy Ruler Deity Guan), Taishang Laojun (The Grand Supreme Elderly Lord), Dongyue Dadi (God of Taishan), Shennong Dadi (God of Agriculture), Doulao Yuanjun (Mother of the Big Dipper), and Wenchang Diju (God of Literature and Culture) are on the lower level. With all these deities, the temple has become a temple where Confucianism, Buddhism, and Daoism co-exist.
When the appearance of the temple structure was completed in 1988, the five-day blessing praying ritual was held. In January 1993, the colonnades, stone lines, stone sculptures, wooden sculptures, color paintings, and statue gold-plating were also completed. By this time, the whole construction project was eventually completed.

1.A fishing company often donates to the temple. Being asked by a member of the temple staff one day, an old man replied. His families are all seafarers. When they stopped in the middle of a voyage for a break one day, he just felt something was wrong, even he couldn’t really figure that out. Then, someone jumped in and said, “Why can’t we go a little further? It’d better not to stop here.” Without a doubt, the old sailed the ship a few nautical miles away and stopped for the break. To his surprise, dark clouds gathered around the ship immediately, and the crew burst into panic. Instead of staying over them, the dark clouds moved to the location where they previously stopped, and a rainstorm began there. In they time, they kept thinking what would happen to them if they didn’t change the location, and if they would go home safe.

2.This is a story about the 2019 pilgrimage. The temple usually assigns men to carry Matsu’s litter in the pilgrimage, because many believers want to crawl beneath the litter. It is unbelievable that one female worshipper saw herself carrying Matsu’s litter in her dream. When she told the dream to the temple staff, they said that they would have the litter carried by men, and no staff member reported this to the temple’s chairperson. One day, the chairperson told the staff to let women carry Matsu’s litter this time. As it was Matsu’s litter, no one dared to say a thing. However, that female worshipper was not familiar with the temple’s chairperson. That lady acquainted with the chairperson when the head of Dade Borough invited the chairperson to his office for the borough head election. On hearing that the temple would have Matsu’s litter carried by women this time, that lady immediately told their chairperson about her dream. The chairperson immediately replied, “That’s you now. Please carry Matsu’s litter for the two-day pilgrimage then.” (The deity has chosen her own porters.) In fact, that female worshipper had gone through two tough days. When some took rest, she needed to take care of her ill father and didn’t get any rest for two whole days.
